Turkey Time

Yes it's turkey time but not in France. I received a tip from my neighbor Daniel Flores, the pastor of Calvary Chapel in Lyon and Chambery. Last year they were able to get turkeys from Auchan for their church thanksgiving dinners. I went to check it out. Auchan at Port des Alpes near Ikea had no turkeys, so I picked up the poultry help line in the meat section and was received by a nice gentleman named Alain. He said they had had turkeys but no one bought them they went bad, and they stopped ordering them. However, he said if someone really wanted one before december they might be able to get one for them. It was disappointing. I walked around for a while looking for my mother in law who'd wandered off. I must of have looked unhappy because he came back over to me and says, hold on, I'm going to call my supervisor and check. He picks up the phone and calls Philip. The final word is that there will be turkeys the week of Thanksgiving! Alain was very happy and very proud to have put the smile back on my face :) A word of caution though, this year Daniel got the Auchan in St Genis Laval to commit to ordering them a turkey but then they got word back that their provider refuses to kill their turkeys before the 1st of December. So whatever you do, if you plan on getting a whole turkey, keep a plan B in mind.

Some other places to check... over a decade ago I was able to order a whole turkey from a nice man at the daily market off the square at the Croix Rousse. I have heard from others that they have also been able to get whole turkeys there over the years. That market is closed on mondays. I've heard you can also get them at Les Halles. You can check your local butcher, or the poultry stands at the markets, particularly the local producers markets, but you need to start looking right away since it takes time once the order is placed for the turkey to be ready for consumption.

And if you find a whole turkey, make sure it fits in your little french oven before you buy it!!!

Pie Plates- Best Deal in Town

I was doing some window shopping at Babou Venissieux when all of the sudden I came upon a real fluted pie plate! As if that weren't great enough already, it was only 2,99€ They came in all different sizes for a medium 1.4 quart to individual sized plates. You should be able to see from the pic that the largest size is slightly smaller than my grandmother's tin pie plate on the bottom. They were a little hard to find. Look in the aisle with all the frying pans, then look on the bottom shelf by the pillar. There were at least five or six when I left.

You can get a lot of good deals at Babou, it's kind of like the walmart of Lyon. They all kinds of birthday candles, like the ones we are use to seeing in the US for really cheap. It's a good store to check out if you need something, don't need something of super high quality and don't want to pay an arm and a leg. If you don't have a car the twelve goes by there.

You can also usually get some nice ceramic pie plates from stores like Alice Delice, which now has a shop downtown, and from stores like BHV in the Part Dieu.

Saltine Crackers.... a low sodium version

It was girl's night in around dinner and chick flics when our friend Marlene pulled them out her bag, the LU Heudebert "Crackers" Nature. They are exactly like saltine crackers but not with much less salt. We've seen them at Simply, at Carrefour, and they should be in all the grocery stores. I'm in the mood to make chili now :)

Auchan, my new best friend

Last spring, just before Cinco de Mayo, I was at the cheese counter at the Porte des Alpes Auchan and they had real cheddar cheese. It was a sharp cheddar cheese, but not the vintage aged cheddar we usually get. The next time I stopped by, thinking I would get some to put on my chili, it was gone, nothing but the vintage cheddar. So I asked the guy at the cheese counter if they would be getting any back in. He proceeded to tell me they had the yellow kind just because they could get any of the "good" cheddar, and wouldn't be having any more of that "other" cheese. I must have left an impression when I very emphatically and repetitively told him that the "other" cheese WAS the good cheddar cheese, because now they have both all of the time. They are calling them cheddar rouge, and cheddar fermier. Not only that, they now have Mole, Kikkoman Teriyaki Sauce, Old El Paso Chili con Carne, Cranberry sauce, and Betty Crocker Bisquick.

For those of us who enjoy authentic mexican food, you will be happy to know that Auchan does indeed have Costeña Mole on it's shelves in the tex-mex section. I had mole last night, it was total heaven! I didn't do rice and beans, because it's too hot, and I'm out of sesame seeds. That's why I have to go back and buy some more, so that I can do it again properly once the 90 degree weather is over :)

Auchan St Genis Laval: Real mexican La Costeña products!!!!

About salsas she says: "...they have various types: Arriera, Casera, Taquera, Verde... I think they even have Mole. Anyway, when I first discovered it, it was in the "Produits du Monde" aisle at Auchan and all the products were 50% off! I stocked up on as much as I could because generally, when I find something this good, it doesn't last. To my pleasant surprise, the Auchan at St Genis Laval is fully stocked, but they are normally priced (2€30.. not that bad). Also, instead of buying the Old El Paso tortillas, I try to find the XL ones that are used for Kebabs or Libanais. They are usually cheaper and you can actually roll a burrito with them."

GREAT FIND!!! Get some while it lasts! I totally agree with you Stephanie about the tortillas. I usually make them myself since I can't stand to pay that much for flour tortillas :)

A French Brand of Cream Cheese

I don't go to Carrefour very often, because somehow I always end up spending more money than I counted on. This last time it was because there is a new addition to the cheese isle. There was a nice lady sampling this new product called "fromage à la crème" by Elle & Vire. They have Black Pepper, Chives, and Plain. It's the French answer to Philadelphia Cream Cheese. It comes with a cheese cake recipe on the label and all. Unlike "fromage à tartiner", this cheese has a more robust consistency that should work great in American dessert recipes. I haven't tried it out yet, but I'm pretty sure this one is a winner.

Fresh Corn on the Cob!!!

I first came to France 16 years ago. A couple of weeks ago was the first time I have come across fresh corn on the cob! The french still haven't quite figured out what to do with it yet, expect for putting it in their salad, which is why each ear comes with a handy paper band with instructions. They have the "Recette Micro-Onde: A La Coque" (Boiled Corn in the Microwave), "Recette Vapeur: A La Quebequoise" (Quebec Style Steamed Corn), "Recette Barbecue: A La Provencale" (Provence Style Barbequed Corn), and "Recette Four: En Papillotte" (Foil Wrapped Corn Baked in the Oven).

So where do you get this corn? In the 7th arrondisment near Gerland, at:

The retail section is at the back of the driveway. They always carry fresh corn on the cob but sometimes they run out. They are open from 8am-7pm Mon-Fri., 8am-1pm and 3pm-7pm on Sat., and from 8am-12pm Sundays and Holidays.

Graham Crackers

After a lot of reading, I finally figured out that there is an english equivalent to graham crackers, called digestive biscuits. Here in France you can pick get them under the McVitie's brand Sablés Anglais. There are pretty darn close. I think they will work nicely for a graham cracker crust, and they are big enough for smores. It turns out that they're everywhere, however you can always pick them up at Little Britain.

Popsicles

It's was still 90 at 9 pm tonight and it's supposed to be hotter tomorrow. That's got me thinking of popsicles. Last summer at this time, just before the sales start, I found some popsicle molds at the BHV at the Part Dieu. I don't have any children, and my husband says that ice makes his teeth hurt, so I had no excuse to buy them... I still want some!

If you are looking to get some popsicle molds I've seen them advertised at Ikea, and Tupperware. There are Tupperware consultants in Lyon :) I haven't been back to BHV, so I can't say if they have them again this year. I've also heard they may have them at Babou (there's one right next to the new KFC on Route de Vienne).

How do you say popsicle mold in French?

The newest Kentucky Fried Chicken is at the end of the Route de Vienne. It's best gotten to by car, but you can also get there on the 12.

Good Ice Cream

If you are fond of firm and flavorful american style ice cream, like Ben and Jerry's or Häagen Dazs, then you will really appreciate Mackie's of Scotland. You can get it at the anglo store, Little Britain at 12 Boulevard des Brotteaux, 69006, Lyon.

I found it to be very reasonably priced, and it's very yummy!!!

The Mother of all Baking Powders

It use to be that I would get excited any time I found a little jar of baking powder that wasn't in a little pink sachet. When I found a one kilo canister for around 5 euros I thought I had really hit the jackpot. It lasted me for about a year. But then I went to Paris Store with a friend and we found 8 lbs of Xin Jing Brand Double Acting Baking Powder that cost us less than 8 euros! I've been using it for a while now with no problems. If you like asian food and you've never been to Paris Store, you should go, (even if you don't need 8 lbs of baking powder). It's located at 8 Boulevard Irene Joliot Curie, 69200 Vénissieux. Etat-Unis-Vivani on the T4 is the closest stop.

October keeps on getting better for wine drinkers in Lyon! LE reader Sara reports that this Saturday, Lyon will host a city-wide rencontre with 10 crus of Beaujolais.

Stop by the mairie of your arrondissement and/or Place des Terreaux to welcome winemakers from Beaujolais and their products. And yes, the "welcome" will definitely involve free tastings!

Lyon's annual Salon des Vins des Vignerons Independants is possibly the biggest wine salon in town. I can be wrong. Either way, being able to choose from more than 500 wine stands is pretty exciting!!!

Infos Pratiques

Where: Hall Tony Garnier
When: October 28-November 1
Cost: 6 euros (Go for free by clipping invitations from local newspapers, Lyon Plus,
Plus, Petit Bulletin, etc. Invitations are usually published 2 weeks before salon.)

Four and 1/2 steps to navigate a public wine salon:

1. Pick up a complimentary glass at the entrance
2. Walk around & see what interest you
3. Choose a stand, say hello & ask to "gouter"
4. After you are finished, thank the winemakers, make a purchase and/or move on
4.5 Repeat steps 1-4 & enjoy!

The winemakers usually supervise the stands themselves. They are proud of their wine and welcome questions.

Le Vignerons de France

This wine salon showcases wines from more than 100 winemakers throughout France. That's more than 100 stands to taste from. Glasses and maps are provided for free at the entrance and all tastings are gratuit. Don't forget to bring a backpack to cart some good finds home :).

There should be a list at the salon with all the "winning" wines listed. If you are into sweet wine and especially Muscat de Rivesaltes, a personal favorite of mine is a domain called Lauriga. I thought I had hit the big jackpot last week when I saw mini cheesecakes at the Croix Rousse Monoprix. (Click here to buy them online: blueberry or lemon.) But apparently, there are now several cheesecake jackpots popping up in the area!

I received this email from a Lyon Eats reader:

Just wanted to let you know that I found yesterday in our local Casino (in Clermont-Ferrand) a prepared key lime pie and blueberry cheesecake. It was in the aisle with the yogurts and puddings, beside all of the other prepared desserts (tiramasu, creme brulee, etc). I bought the key lime pie (my husband's favorite) and it was really good! Next, I will have to try the cheesecake....

Could it be that cheesecake has officially hopped the pond? And key lime pie too?

Have you seen it in other stores? Apparently Frü also makes little carrot cakes, but I haven't seen them yet.

Completely unrelated to food, but totally relevant to life in Lyon for Americans. Have I got a hairstylist recommendation for you...

I've had good experiences and nightmare experiences with hair salons in Lyon. But yesterday's was great. I highly recommend Antonio (color) and Lola (cut) at Jean-Claude Biguine at the Croix Rousse.

Antonio speaks excellent English and is very reassuring and knowledgeable. He's a color technician, but is available and happy to translate as needed during your cut/style. (His day off is Thursday.)

I checked with the manager and they would be happy to welcome English-speakers who feel more comfortable explaining what they want in their native language.

I'm kind of obsessed with Fritos. Of all the horrible things to love, I choose Fritos. And they are truly impossible to find in Lyon. I've looked. I've begged. I found them in a gas station in West Africa, but I can't find them here.

So when a friend bought me (not one but two!) bags of these corn chips made by Mexicante... bliss. They're lime and chili flavor, which is pretty darn spicy for France. And they are addictive, I tell you. Watch out!

She found them at Auchan Caluire, and I will be forever grateful.

I am very excited about what I found today! It's the closest thing I have found here to brown sugar. Of course, I have used sucre vergeoise - a commonly recommended substitute. I just find that the taste is lacking. It's missing the molasses flavor. I've also tried raw sugars, but they have this off-taste and not enough molasses flavor either.

So today, on a lark I picked up this: "Douceur de Coco" 100% sucre de cocotier non raffiné, s'utilise comme le sucre brun.

It's coconut sap sugar. It tastes like an extra dark, dark brown sugar, without the funky! (At least in my opinion.) I've always prefered darker brown sugar anyway. It turns out that not only does it taste good, but it is recommended for diabetics due to a low glycemic index of 35.

It's spendy, €6,80 for 500g, but for me it is well worth it. You can find it at La Vie Claire near Grange Blanche, 6 Avenue Rockefeller, 69008 Lyon, France.

Please welcome Dori, our newest guest contributor here at Lyon Eats. Today she's reviewing some of our favorite stores and introducing us to some new (to me!) options.

Bahadourian is a great store. I love it. However, it's kind of spendy, and I've found a few other places where you can get some good deals. The advantage of Bahadourian, in it's defense, is that all their products are nice fresh and shiny.

These three stores are all basically in the same neighborhood:

Of course if you want canned pinto beans, you can also go to TOPKAPI at Place Guichard. It's within walking distance from the other three stores.

Just found this spot. It's like a mini Bahadourian. It also has the full line of Epsig spices - remember to avoid the "chili powder" and pick up ''epices loubia" for making chili.

I admit that haven't even tried looking for a substitute for Chips Ahoy cookies in France because, well... I assumed that there wouldn't be a good one.

But the time has come for me to admit that I was wrong. (Thanks, C!)

a) are even better than Chips Ahoy
b) have nothing to do with Granola
c) make me laugh because it looks like 'gross' chunks de chocolat :)

I highly recommend you try them. I even found coupons!

If Cinco de Mayo got you craving Mexican food, we've got good news for you. One of our Lyon Eats contributors has found pinto beans - in two places! The French name for them here is haricots cocos rouges, haricots cocos roses or haricots pintos.

Canned Pinto Beans 800g for 1,90€ at TOPKAPI Imp.-Exp. Epicerie Orientale, 17 Rue Voltaire, 69003, which is at Place Guichard. According to D., "This place is like a mini Bahadourian."

You can also get them dry at Bahadourian (above) for 2,95€/kilo, or probably cheaper at some of the Indian or African stores at the Guillotière.

American desserts - help needed!

I came across this survey on Le Journal des Femmes recently. They asked readers (French women predominantly) what their favorite Anglo-Saxon desserts were. Based on the results, I'm pretty sure that in this case favorite should be 'spelt favourite'.

Where's the carrot cake, the apple pie, the pumpkin pie or the cupcakes? (And seriously, le muffin and le scone?!) Obviously we Americans have been slacking off on our duty to share the deliciousness of US desserts with our French friends.

Summer in France is a great time to get to know your neighbors over apéros or long, lazy dinners. if you want to play it safe on the dessert menu, now you know what people like. If you want to share a slice of American culture, take the plunge and bust out one of those Pampered Chef recipes that are so popular at baby showers and such in the US.

I know. Inviting French people over can be intimidating. Which wine(s)? How do I pick the right cheeses? What will be talk about? I'm not much help on those first two questions, but I do have a tip for the last one.

I was inspired recently.

Inspired to create a map of the free public restrooms in Lyon. It probably doesn't take much imagination to figure out what pressing need inspired me. (I'll give you a hint - how many of the past posts had to do with walking around the city for hours? Oh, and cafés.) Unfortunately I did not follow my own rule: have a plan P.

Anyway, here it is!

My personal favorite is located in Vieux Lyon near the métro entrance. It's open during the day, is always clean, rarely has a line and (ftw) has TP.

The one at Bellecour, behind the Tourism Office, is in a more practical location. However, ladies who prefer to sit rather than squat will want to avoid the Turkish toilet option. Also, while the facilities are free, it is polite to tip the dame pipi who keeps the place clean(ish).

My friend Meg recommends stopping by FNAC on rue de la République. It costs 25 centimes, but as she says, "Better to pay a quarter for a clean bathroom than to be obligated to buy something at a café." Good point.

On that note, there are pay-potties across the city. They are generally cleaner than the freebies, but you'll need exact change (usually 25 centimes).

One last bit of advice: carry a pack of tissues and hand sanitizer. You just never know.

Tabasco & hot wings!

In honor of this little find, I'm posting my favorite recipe for hot wings, made with ingredients found in France.

These are quick and easy, and they go great with Cheryl's blue cheese dressing

3 Tbsp butter, melted
5 Tbsp Tabasco sauce
1 Tbsp paprika
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cayenne
1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper (or more!)

Clean chicken wings to make sure there are no stray feathers. Cut wings into portions through the joints, discarding wingtips.

Combine all the rest of the ingredients in a bowl, then pour into a large ziploc bag. Add wings and coat in mixture. Cover and refrigerate for 2-3 hours or overnight, stirring occasionally.

Cover a baking dish with aluminium foil. Spread wings over the foil, brush liberally with marinade. Roast for 30-35 minutes in 400° oven until golden brown. Turn the wings half way through the baking, basting again with marinade.

Chili and chili cheese dip... made in France!

It's a good Monday morning when you wake up and find two recipes (with photos!) waiting in your email inbox. Lyon Eats reader and contributor D. is sharing her Tex-Mex discoveries with us. Thank you!

I've been on my own little Tex-Mex mission, specifically to find chili powder or a good substitute for it. I've found some great stuff that makes chili you can barely tell wasn't made with the chili powder that I brought from home. Below is a copy of quick chili recipe you can make with ingredients bought right here in Lyon, and a chili cheese dip you can make with the leftovers.

For the spices you will want to go to Supermarché Asie at 12 rue Passet, 69007, Lyon.

Enter the store, go straight, past the rice, then right away to your right there will be an aisle of spices in little plastic bags. Most are of the Espig brand. Get one 100g bag of Epices Loubia and one 100g bag of Piment doux especial. This piment doux is not the same as you might already have in you spice rack that you got at Super U or wherever. Both cost between 1,30E and 1,80E.

Epices Loubia is a spice mix used to make a North African bean-based dish. I've had it at my mother in law's house, and I kept saying to my self, darn, that tastes a lot like chili. You'll notice that in the picture with the three bags of spices I tried out the chili powder that I brought from home in the background is of a darker and richer in color and flavor.

WARNING: There is something called "chili powder" for Tex-Mex recipes right next to the ingredients you need to get. Trust me, it's not chili powder, it's more like cut cayenne pepper with a strong hint of clove!!!

QUICK CHILI in Lyon
(makes 3-4 bowls)

Ingredients:

500 g ground beef
1 can haricots blancs 500g
2 cans double concentré de tomate, 140g each
1/2 cup épices Loubia
1/4 cup épices Piment doux especial
2 1/2 cups water
1 Tbsp garlic powder
1 tsp oregano

Instructions:

Open cans of tomato paste. Open the can of bean, and drain.

Heat oiled frying pan to med-high to high heat. Salt and brown ground beef.

Add Loubia spices and Piment doux especial, stir and let cook with the meat for about 30 secconds.

Add 2 1/2 cups water, 2 cans double concentré de tomate, drained beans, and sitr until well mixed.

Let simmer until desired consistency, about 2-4 mins on high heat. Add 1 Tbsp garlic powder and 1 tsp oregano in the last minute of cooking.

For CHILI CHESSE DIP:

Set aside a bowl's worth of chili. In a larger bowl mix about equal amounts of chili to St Moret cheese (which is just like our cream cheese). Heat until melted in the microwave and stir. Eat dip with tortilla chips!

K. recently emailed me to ask which French cheeses to use for Tex-Mex recipes. In the country of over 1,000 cheeses, there must be some good Tex-Mex options, right? Here's her email:

I was wondering if you could tell me if you have found a substitue for cheddar cheese or even Monterey Jack that melts like they do? We have used Mimolette, which tastes fairly similar to mild cheddar - but I'm not sure how well it melts. I am wanting to make some Mexican food for friends and I normally use Jack Cheese, Pepper Jack, and Cheddar. Sharp cheddar usually. Is there anything you have found that melts like cheddar? How about that tastes like Monterey Jack?

Personally, I like Gouda. It's fairly mild and melts pretty well. You can get Cheddar (as seen here) or, as K. said, some people find Mimolette works as a substitute.

Any suggestions or ideas? (I would loooove to find a good cheese for making the queso dip served in Mexican restaurants in the US.)

And in honor of this Tex-Mex focus, here's a recipe for making your own taco seasoning from Apartment Therapy.

(Or, in a pinch, just use 3-4 teaspoons of cumin for every pound of meat.) Olé!

Ingredients:
• 1 teaspoon Cornstarch
• 2 teaspoons Chili Powder
• 1 1/2 teaspoons Kosher Salt
• 2 teaspoons Garlic Powder
• 1 teaspoon ground Cumin
• 1 teaspoon Cayenne/Paprika
• 2 teaspoons dried Onions

Instructions

1. Measure: Measure out all ingredients side by side to ensure you don't double up or leave one out.
2. Mix: Combine ingredients in a zip top bag or bowl and shake/stir to combine until cornstarch and onions are well distributed.
3. Store: Keep in an air tight container for up to 1 year.
4. To Use: 7 teaspoons of mix is enough to season 1 pound of meat. We often start with 4 teaspoons and increase it from there. Some meats like turkey and chicken take less, while pork and beef might take a little more. Play to your own tastes and remember, you can always add more, but you can't take it out!

"The company that sells Splenda stopped selling retail in the entire country of France. They only sell it wholesale, so if you have a buddy that runs a cafe or something they might be able to order a large amount. Starbucks has it to put in their coffee drinks. I think they still sell in GB and Spain."

A: It stands for 'Best I Ever Had' and is pronounced 'bee-aye'.

The Académie française prefers that French speakers do not incorporate English words like brunch into their language, and suggests using the phrase le grand petit déjeuner. Despite the wishes of the Académie, the typical French person readily says "brunch." In fact, most French-French dictionaries have an entry for "brunch" but not "grand petit déjeuner". 2 good wines under 6€

I recently discovered two great tasting wines, a white and a red, with great price tags.

Côte du Rhône 2007 Reserve from Ortas

This red wine is neither too powerful nor too weak. If I had to use one word to describe its taste I’d say “balanced”. It is a good wine to serve when you have both novice and experienced wine drinkers at your table.

Le Pressoir, a cave/wine cellar at 7 Rue de la Part-Dieu, 69003 Lyon, carries this Côte du Rhône for 5€ a bottle. There are a few other kinds of red around the same price, but so far I have found this Côte du Rhône to be the best.

Gewurztraminer 2008 Vieilles Vignes from Les Vignerons de Sigolsheim

This white wine from Alsace is dangerously good and easy to drink. It works very well as an apéritif. Some gewürztraminer can be too sweet, making it difficult to enjoy before a meal, but this one is perfect, delicious yet not intrusive. A bottle costs around 5.50€ at Marché Presqu’ile at 14 Rue de la Platière, 69001 Lyon.

Recently a Lyon Eats reader asked about finding hot breakfast cereals. Considering the snow this week, I think it's a topic that interests a lot of us! Below you will find a list of American breakfast foods available in Lyon. If you are looking for something else that's not on this list or have something to add, please do! You can leave a comment at the end of this post.

Bacon: poitrine fumée
I find what is labeled ‘bacon’ is more like what we call Canadian bacon.

Bagels
Now available in packs of 4 at Monoprix in the bread section. Frozen bagels are available from Raconte-moi la Terre or Picard. Bagel shops in town include the two Best Bagel locations at place Terraux and Ampère and City Bagels in the 2nd.

Country ham
Jambon fumé sold for raclette tastes like Virginia Country Ham if you heat it in a frying pan. (Emailed by W.)

Country sausage
See recipe here to make your own, or try chipolatas as a substitute.

Cream of wheat
According to Wikipedia, cream of wheat is similar in texture to grits or polenta, but made with ground wheat (farina) instead of ground corn. Lucky for us, farina is available at bio stores and often at Bahadourian.

English muffins
Both white and wheat, available at Monoprix in the bread section

Granola
Carrefour has the best granola we've ever had anywhere - hands down. It's their generic Muesli in the green box.

Grits
Polenta is close if you're a homesick Southerner. (Emailed by W.) According to Wikipedia, grits is similar to other thick maize-based porridges from around the world such as polenta. The difference is that grits are usually made from quickly-cooked coarsely ground kernels or from ground hominy.

Maple syrup: sirop d’érable
Available at most grocery stores, usually near sugar and baking ingredients.

Maxwell House coffees
Found instant coffees and capuccino mixes at Intermarché. (Emailed by J.)

Oats, rolled: flocons d’avoine
Available inexpensively from Bahadourian, L'Eau Vive, and La Vie Claire. They have both large and small rolled oats - and don't miss the delicious 5 grain mix from bio stores! You can also find Quaker Oats in most large grocery stores.

Pancake syrup
Available at Bahadourian.Missippi Belle Pancake Syrup is available in the international section of Carrefour at Part Dieu. (Emailed by W.)

Quaker Oats
The original Quaker Oats are available at most grocery stores. You can also find Quaker Oats brand crunchy cereals which are more like granola. Available with strawberries or chocolate, or plain.

Tropicana juices
Available at most grocery stores. The brand is owned by PepsiCo and you can find a wide variety of juices, including orange, pink grapefruit, mandarine, yellow grapefruit, apple, ruby red breakfast, orange-mango, mandarine-raspberry, apple-litchi, red berry breakfast, breakfast tonic, tropical wake-up, etc...

Last winter our Monoprix started carrying small, cooked hams by a brand called - ever so appropriately - Mister Pig. The price was reasonable and the taste was really American. We quickly got spoiled, and then one day Mister Pig disappeared.

Looking for somewhere new to eat in Lyon? Garden State is now open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and tapas. You can get a drink, stop by for a meal, or take it to-go. Located just off Bellecour, their menu includes:

Breakfast: fresh fruit or veggie juice + hot drink + toast, pancake, muffin or yogurt for 6 euros

Also try their donuts (white chocolate, Milka...) and specialty muffins (blueberry, Milka, chocolate...) or a breakfast blend smoothie.

Lunch: among many other options, you'll find bagel sandwiches and wraps. For 9 euros, try a bagel or wrap + dessert + smoothie.

Oh yeah, and did I mention over 35 KINDS OF SMOOTHIE? Their combinations have great names too, like the Punky Brewster, the Palm Springs, the Cure and the Circus. Delicious!
