Open Monday - Saturday from 8am to 9pm

Looking for somewhere new to eat in Lyon? Garden State is now open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and tapas. You can get a drink, stop by for a meal, or take it to-go. Located just off Bellecour, their menu includes:

Breakfast: fresh fruit or veggie juice + hot drink + toast, pancake, muffin or yogurt for 6 euros

Also try their donuts (white chocolate, Milka...) and specialty muffins (blueberry, Milka, chocolate...) or a breakfast blend smoothie.

Lunch: among many other options, you'll find bagel sandwiches and wraps. For 9 euros, try a bagel or wrap + dessert + smoothie.

Oh yeah, and did I mention over 35 KINDS OF SMOOTHIE? Their combinations have great names too, like the Punky Brewster, the Palm Springs, the Cure and the Circus. Delicious!

Opens next week: Best Bagels 2!

Tucked behind the Ampère métro stop, just a block or so away from Ninkasi Ampère, is the location for the soon-to-be-opened Best Bagels! (And by soon-to-be, I mean early next week.) The menu will feature the same favorites as the original restaurant at 1 Place Tobie Robatel.

Wine tasting in Lyon: fun & free!

A very big welcome to Lyon Eats' newest guest writer, Ngan Dam. Ngan is currently teaching English here in Lyon, and also searching for the best wines along the way. She is a trained and certified English literature and ESL teacher, has years of experience in the translation and interpretation industry, speaks English, Vietnamese, and Spanish, and is working to add French to the list. She is a Suite 101 contributor, writes for Go English mgazine, and blogs at Le Croissant Trail.

Wine tasting is one of my favorite things to do in Lyon for two reasons: it is FUN and it is FREE. Where else in the world can you have gratuit access to hundreds, if not thousands, kinds of wine in one place, at the same time?

Don’t worry if you are a novice drinker (like me), these salons des vins are super casual and the vignerons (winemakers) love to talk about their wines to those who visit their stands and want to taste their products. Some vignerons speak English!

Vinomedia and Vigneron Independent are two organizations that have annual salons des vins in Lyon.

Vinomedia hosts several salons des vins yearly in Lyon. Their salons are smaller than Vigneron Independent’s, featuring about 100 winemakers. Click here for the dates and location of Vinomedia’s upcoming tasting events.

Vigneron Independent, an association of independent winemakers of France, hosts a big salon every fall at le Halle de Tony Garnier in Gerland. More than 500 vignerons showcase their wines over the course of 5 days. Imagine all the wine you can sample!

Entrance fees to these salons run between 3 to 6 euros. However, you can request free invitations on Vinomedia and Vigneron Independent websites. Local newspapers, such as ANOUS, LyonPlus and Le Petit Bulletin, often print free invitations a few days or weeks before the salons.

Santé!

10 days of Thanksgiving recipes!

I'll be posting a recipe each day until Thanksgiving over at Bon Appétit, a blog with over 400 recipes for Americans cooking in France. These aren't just any holiday recipes - they're tried and tested American recipes using ingredients you can get in France! Green bean casserole, sweet potatoes two different ways, deviled eggs, buttery yeast rolls, two kinds of dressing, pumpkin pie filling from scratch...

Happy Thanksgiving!

e-My American Market

The November e-newsletter from My American Market has just come out - and if you don't get it, you really are missing out. I've lived in France for 6 years and every issue of this newsletter has consistently had topics of interest and things that made me go, "I didn't know that!" and, "How cool!"

In this issue, for example, there's not only a recipe for Pumpkin Cranberry Bread, but also a recipe for Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice. (Now that's useful in France!)

It's more than just food though - the new immigration visa (no carte de séjour required) and saying it with flowers en français and the 8 flowers to avoid.

You can sign up for the newsletter here (I really recommend you do), become a fan on Facebook and also follow Clark from MyAM on Twitter.

Recipe: Homemade candy corn!

Recipe and photo by Jessie Oleson (aka Cakespy) at Serious Eats

Homemade Candy Corn
- makes about one pound of candy corn -

Ingredients

1 cup granulated sugar
2/3 cup light corn syrup*
1/3 cup salted butter
2 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
1/3 cup powdered milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
red and yellow food coloring

Procedure

1. In a medium sized bowl, combine the sifted confectioners' sugar and powdered milk. Set to the side.

2. In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, corn syrup and butter. Bring to a boil on high heat, stirring constantly. Once it reaches the boiling point, reduce heat to medium and continue stirring for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in the vanilla extract and remove from heat.

3. Add the confectioners' sugar and powdered milk mixture to the wet ingredients; stir well until the mixture is thoroughly incorporated and smooth.

4. Let the dough cool until it is firm enough to handle, about 30 minutes to an hour (I just let it cool in the saucepan).

5. Divide the dough into three equal parts and set each third into a separate bowl. Add 2 to 3 drops of yellow food coloring to one dish, one drop of red and two drops of yellow to another dish, and leave the remaining dish uncolored. Knead the dough to which you have added food coloring until the color is even (you may want to use gloves to ensure that you don't stain yourself). If the dough is feeling very soft or sticky, you may want to chill the dough for about 20 minutes in the refrigerator before proceeding with the next steps.

6. On top of a sheet of waxed paper or parchment paper, use your hands to roll each color of dough into a long, slender rope. You can roll it out to your desired thickness: for larger candies, make each rope thicker; for smaller candies, make each rope thinner.

7. Line the three ropes of dough together: white, orange, and yellow. To ensure that they will stick together, lay a piece of waxed paper on top and give them a very gentle rolling with a rolling pin. You just want to adhere them, not to flatten them.

8. Using a very sharp knife, cut the dough into triangles. Keep a damp cloth nearby so that you can wipe off the knife if it begins to get a candy residue. This method will result in half a batch of traditionally colored candy corn and half a batch with yellow tips (it's OK—they taste the same). Let the finished kernels sit for an hour or two (do not stack them on top of one another as they will stick together!) to become firm.

* Corn syrup substitute
2 cups white sugar
3/4 cup water
1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
Dash of salt

Combine all ingredients in a heavy, large pan. Stir and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and put cover on it for 3 minutes to get sugar crystals off the sides of the pan. Uncover and cook until it reaches soft ball stage. Stir often.

Cool syrup and store in a covered container at room temperature. It will keep for about 2 months. Makes almost 2 cups.

Cooking for French guests

I've lived in Lyon for five years and am just now discovering the amazing French section of MyRecipes.com. Far beyond the same ol', same ol' of boeuf bourguignon and brie en croûte you find on most sites - this one has recipes for real French food, and lots of them. It really helps take the intimidating edge off cooking a meal for your French friends. (And here's my recommendation for all the cultural information you'll want to know.)

I am beyond thrilled with this recipe discovery... and suddenly very hungry. Below is the recipe for one of my favorite lyonnais dishes from MyRecipes.com. Happy browsing and bon appétit, y'all!

Salad Lyonnaise

(c) Kui-Doraku

Ingredients

* 8 cups (8 oz.) frisée or tender inner curly endive leaves, rinsed and crisped
* About 1/4 pound French bread, sliced and toasted
* 1/2 pound side bacon, cut into 1/4-inch dice
* 3 to 4 large eggs
* 1/4 cup white wine vinegar
* 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
* Salt and pepper

Preparation

1. Tear frisée into bite-size pieces and place in a wide salad bowl.

2. Tear bread into 1/2-inch chunks and scatter over the greens.

3. Put bacon in a 10- to 12-inch nonstick frying pan over medium heat and stir often until browned and crisp, 10 to 12 minutes. With a slotted spoon, transfer to towels to drain.

4. Break eggs into drippings in pan, and when whites are firm on the bottom, slide a spatula under each egg and, if desired, carefully turn over. Cook until whites are no longer clear, about 1 minute total. With spatula, transfer eggs to a plate (place side by side); keep warm.

5. Quickly discard all but 2 tablespoons fat from pan. Turn heat to high, add vinegar and mustard, and whisk until mixture boils.

6. Pour hot dressing over frisee and bread, add bacon, and mix. Spoon into wide bowls and top each serving with a hot egg. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
